The appearance and significance of hedges
Contrary to certain theories, hedges are not aspects of semi-naturaf vegetation. They fulfil certain functions (enclosures for cattle, a source of fodder, fuel, and timber) which determine the selection of vegetal types and the way in which they are treated.
Thus, the appearance of the hedge reveals its economic significance and its potential for survival. This paper proposes a method of analysis and large-scale cartography based on the different fevels of growth and on the delimitation of regressive stages. A few examples have been taken from the bocage of Normandy (France)
