Two different methods have been used to study small mammals living in the western parts of France (bocage) :
a) traps disposed along transect lines,
b) grids ( marking recapture method).
Five species of rodents and four of insectivora are usually caught. The two methods gave us convergent results : the number of animais caught in hedgerows is higher than in the fields themselves. But in a year differential spatial distribution is noticeable in the trapped species, which indicates the part played by agricultural practices and types of vegetation as well as migrations from one kind of environment to another.
The functionning of bocage landscapes seems to stimulate species diversity and to regulate population density by the mean of different factors like predation, interindividual relations and interspecific relations.
