Studies made in Morbihan (Brittany), in a wooded countryland region, show that shelterbelts give rise to microclimatic changes (heat, hygrometry) in the closed field lots. Those changes can be discerned as far as a distance equal to nine to ten times the hedges height. Every further site seems to come under the mesoclimatic influence peculiar to the parcelling out of the wooded country land.
Using suitable methodological devices, the direct action of hedges (microclimatic effect of the parcel) could be studied for varied contiguous crops (winter wheat, maïze, italian ray- grass).
The most outstanding incidence concerns the disparity of growth rates, but varied possibilities of compensation, peculiar to each grown species, reduce the differences in dry matter production. Within the site influenced by lateral shelterbelts (hedges being parallel to prevailing winds) the range of the phenomenons appears to be five to seven times weaker than that noted close to the main hedges. |
