| Résumé : |
We used miniaturized electronic devices to investigate at-sea distribution of two shearwaters species breeding on 6 French Mediterranean islands. The aim of the study was to gain new insights on shearwaters foraging and migratory strategies to provide key elements for the designation of coastal and offshore protected areas in the Mediterranean Sea.
Yelkouan shearwaters Puffinus yelkouan from Port-Cros Is. foraged for 1-5 days in coastal waters along the Gulf of Lion, when rearing a young chick.
Cory’s shearwaters, tracked on 5 different islands (Porquerolles, Riou, Frioul, Giraglia and Lavezzi Islands), foraged at-sea for 1.25 days in average during the chick rearing period. Cory’s breeding in Marseille (Riou, Frioul) and Porquerolles islands shared similar waters located in the continental shelf of the Gulf of Lion, whereas the two populations from Corsica foraged in distinct areas. In Lavezzi Is., Cory’s targeted mainly the strait of Bonifacio and Gulf of Asinara in Sardinia, whereas Cory’s from Giraglia Is. foraged close to the colony in local waters located north-east from Corsica.
Preliminary results from 4 Cory’s shearwaters equipped with geolocators on the Lavezzi Is. revealed long-distance migrations in 3 different Atlantic wintering grounds. |
