Sept Iles (Perros-Guirec - 22)Résumé : Marine Important Bird Areas : Fame output During the Interreg FAME programme (Future of the Atlantic Marine Environment 2010-2012), seabirds experts from 5 countries (Ireland, UK, France, Spain and Portugal) avec decided to share their methodologies to identify seabirds hotspots and Important Bird Areas when possible.
Based on 5 years GPS data gathered on the Rouzic Gannet colony, in collaboration with the Natural reserve LPO staff and the CEFE-Montpellier research team (D.Grémillet), the BirdLife method and criteria were applied on the dataset and stables core areas matching IBAs criteria were identified for Northern Gannet. One of these foraging grounds is very consistent with the 2008 first network of marine IBAs ( it is now partially included in 2 SPAs) and the other one is a large transnational area (UK, France) in the Channel. These areas, of around 2000 km2 for the first one, and 3500 km2 for the second one, could both be designated as Marine Protected Areas.
The IBA methodology only requires bird tracking data, and can lead to management recommendations, that can be complemented by habitat modeling.
Both approaches are interesting and advisable, depending on time/resource availability and conservation target.
Annual variations are detected and taken into account by both methodologies.
Using habitat modeling, critical features that can explain this variation, can be identified. In this case, habitat modeling can complement the IBA methodology.

Outside of the breeding season, adult birds wintered within European waters, visited the Mediterranean, or migrated to coastal areas off West Africa, remaining within 4000-5000km from their breeding site and showing marked multiyear wintering site fidelity. Our biotelemetry information allowed the identification of two marine Important Bird Areas in the English Channel.
